Saving Salt Publishing

If you were going to choose a money-making business plan, it probably wouldn't involve publishing poetry, but we're particularly thankful that Chris Hamilton-Emery of Salt Publishing continues to take the risk, as it means we get to read poetry by Pegabovine alum Luke Kennard.

The financial crisis means that Salt is in a little difficulty. We here republish a note by Chris on how you can help. It's pretty straightforward.

Davis Wateracre Is A Silly Name

Hello there -

All quiet and simmery on the Pegabovine front. Lots of things quietly bubbling away, but we aren't in a position to share any of them yet. Keep your cards close to your chest, as my line manager at Clinton Cards said. He was a little odd. Loved cards. Wasn't very close to any humans. Quid pro etc.

Anyway, one big thing is that, after years of people asking me my name and then saying "David?", I've decided to change my stage name to Tom Wateracre.

This is in consultation with my wonderful new agent, Cheryl Hayes of Cheryl Hayes Management, who knows about naming things. She was called Cheryl Hayes, so she called her management company Cheryl Hayes Management. It's all so sensible. Anyway, take a look at me over there, looking speccy and startled.

I will get podcast three up soon as well. I know I've been promising it for ages, but it's really almost done. It really, really almost is.

Hi there -

The live page is now updated with four more gigs that you can check out Davis Wateracre at, including one TV gig (I'm going to be on Big Brother's Little Brother with the wonderful Potted Potter / Pirates people!); one with Pippa Evans, Sara Pascoe, Chris Cox, Girl and Dean, plus even more exciting comedians; one album launch featuring podcast alumni and all-round genius Kat Flint; and one poetry gig! I know! Poetry!

(NB. I will in no way be performing poetry.)

The TV gig will be hitting this page in a YouTubular form next week, as long as there are no technical cock-ups, we don't get bumped from the show, or one of the housemates punches us for being rude about their accents.

I am having horrendous trouble getting online. I'd love to point you at the National Student review of "Polite Club", but can't find it without the internet dropping out.

I can, however, let you have a butchers at the nice review in Fest Magazine.

I'm doing lots of nice gigs with the Comedy 365 people in their show "Sex Tips For Pandas", the addition of whose title to our page will no doubt make our Google hits even more interesting. I'm doing a song or two every day from 6.40pm at the Dragonfly in the Grassmarket. It's free! So go chicky-check it out. Other shows seen: Alex Horne's wonderful "Wordwatching" is a brilliant show, and made me feel even more warm and funny than usual. "Potted Pirates" is another top-notch show from Dan and Jeff, and I have rarely yelled "yarr" with such childish abandon. Isy Suttie is charming and wonderful, and Tim Vine's show is exhausting in its continual brilliance. A final word, however, for the Penny Dreadfuls' show "Aeneas Faversham Forever", which manages to be a massive step forward for a company already about thirty light-years ahead of every other sketch group. Amazing.

Hi there all -

I'm now in Edinburgh, with sporadic internet access, so here's my first post, two shows in!

Thanks to all of the people who have already come to the show. We've had some moments of extraordinary delight - like Jimmy who thought that an AK47 was a plane (we're unsure how jokey he was being), the shocking revelation that Scrabulous had been shut down (since disproved by, uh, me playing a game of Scrabulous), not to mention the most awkward loo break ever. Sorry, person whose name I've forgotten.

PEGABOVINE: POLITE CLUB is now on every day at the Pleasance Courtyard in a spangly portakabin called the Beside, at 1.30pm. Come say hello! Or book tickets here! Or at the EdFringe website if it's started working again!

Other shows seen: "Idiots of Ants" also in Pleasance Courtyard - Beside and "Girl and Dean" in the Pleasance Courtyard - Cellar. Check them out as they are both splendid.

Pegabovine Recommends

Don't just come to see Pegabovine: Polite Club at this year's Edinburgh Fringe! Why not check out the shows of some of our friends and associates, and other shows that have people in that are not friends or associates, but upon whom we have rather silly friend-crushes...

Like Jo Neary! Her show was my favourite of last year, and she will undoubtedly be awesome again. (Though in the Assembly Rooms! So far away!)

The Penny Dreadfuls will, with ball-crushing inevitability, deliver amazing things with Aeneas Faversham Forever. This should be at the top of your list of shows to see. It's on in the Pleasance Courtyard. (Also check out Sketchatron for more P Diddys goodness...)

Our double-bill buddies Girl And Dean shall be splendid, and are directed by Pega-director Richard Hurst, as are those charmers Dan and Jeff in the all-new Potted Pirates, and the not-at-all-new-but-still-great Potted Potter.

Podcast alumni are also in Edinburgh. My housemate The Comedian Stuart Goldsmith is in the wonderful Kiosk Of Champions with Richard Sandling. It's completely bloody free. Amazing. It'll never work. The Actor Loo Brealey is also at the Fringe with the way-more-highbrow Pornography at the Traverse. I'm looking forward to the Google searches that title sends our way.

Our other comedy friends are also there: Faultless and Torrance, The Idiots Of Ants, the unsurpassable Josie Long, the wonderful Pippa Evans, Sanjay Shelat and the ImproJam, lovely Hils Barker, fantastic Isy Suttie, Surrey homeboy Tim Vine, and of course, King of our Edinburgh Fringe last year, the utterly brilliant Rhod Gilbert.

Theatre-wise, be sure to check out The Search for Sunshine, and a special mention for the crazy, crazy guys in Victims Of Duty, deserved NSDF award-winners, and owners of one giant hand. Please check them out!

And hey! Why not check out people who we don't even know! They're brilliant too! The awesome awesome awesome Wil Hodgson, superlatives haven't been invented that could describe the greatness of Nick Mohammed, deadpan supergroup Ginger And Black, the too-good-for-their-own-good Pappy's Fun Club... dear lord, there are a lot of shows on, aren't there?

My final two recommendations are:-
1) Susie's Wholefood Diner‎ at 51 West Nicolson Street. The food is tasty, and there is sometimes live music.
2) The Dark Knight. Obviously.

Preview Review

"Pegabovine: Polite Club" had its first preview on Friday in Surbiton, which went very nicely, thank you. Some lovely people there, and hopefully we all learnt a little bit about... well, something or other.

There are two more previews which you should attend if humanly possible... This Saturday (12th) at the Etcetera Theatre, and Wednesday 23rd July at the splendid Arcola Theatre. Details on the Live page.

For those of you who are new to this site, we make comedy. That's where you make people in a room laugh. I mention this as it seems I've recently not been making much comedy at all. I've been writing emails and doing temp work and worrying a lot. Worrying worrying worrying.

Wateracre guests with the Penny Dreadfuls! Again!

Hello all -

Short notice, yes, but I am thrilled to be guesting with the Penny Dreadfuls again at tonight's White Mischief. The doors open at 8pm at the Scala in Kings Cross. Plenty more info from the White Mischief website.

We're doing twenty minutes of Penny Dreadfuls sketches. It's going to be awesome, like an an angel spitting in your eyes.

The Penny Dreadfuls' show "Aeneas Faversham Forever" will be next door to Pegabovine at the Edinburgh Fringe in the Pleasance Two, and the second series of their great radio show "The Brothers Faversham" is being recorded in July and will then be out on BBC7 at some point.

Ladies and gents -

We'd like to announce the not-at-all predictable piece of news that Pegabovine will be returning to Edinburgh this summer.

Due to governmental cutbacks on the amount of Awesome allowed in Edinburgh shows this year, "Pegabovine: Polite Club" will be a one-man sketch show, with Pegabovine's Davis Wateracre taking the audience gently by the hand (after asking them first) and leading them through a cavalcade of songs, sketches, and overly-verbose shenanigans.

Directed once again by Richard Hurst (Potted Potter, Bill Hicks Slight Return, Miranda Hart's House Party), and performing once again at the Pleasance Courtyard, "Pegabovine: Polite Club" will be literally the best thing you could be doing at 1.30pm every day through the Edinburgh Fringe.

Unless you have, I don't know, some ice cream to eat.

Previews will be listed on the Live page and will be updated here. Many to come, lads, through June and July, so do come along and help us make the pointy corners smoother.

Warm Up For The Warm Up

Davis Wateracre (how I write about myself in the third person) is doing a warm-up for his (my) warm-up show!

It is this Monday (10th March) at the Canal Cafe, where he (I) shall be the guest of Bates, Emerson and Knox and shall chow down from their COMEDY HAMPER. Tickets can be booked on 020 7289 6056.

I (Wateracre) will do ten-to-fifteen minutes, which will probably be similar stuff to stuff done at the actual warm-up, so only attend both if you are "mad keen", as the kids say.

Hello there. I've just been to Barcelona. Lovely city. Misty at this time of year. Charming.

Anyway, ~~those of you on Facebook~~ the more eagle-eyed amongst you will be aware of the news I'm about to share with you. I'm doing a show on the 11th March at 9.30pm at the lovely Etcetera Theatre in Camden.

It's temporarily called "The Wateracre Gambit", as if I was going to perform a Robert Ludlum novel single-handedly. This may change. It's warming up material that may or may not be part of an Edinburgh show. I have written a total of one joke. I'm anticipating writing some more, and some new songs, and will play a combination of those new songs and old ones that I am not tired of yet.

I am taking requests. (Leave a comment below!)

Tickets are available here, from the Etcetera website, and there will doubtlessly be some on the door.

In other news, I'm just listening to the Killers' first album. Did you know that all dialogue for "The Lonely Crowd" by Josie Balhurst in our first Edinburgh show "The Slush Pile" came from the lyrics of "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine"? FACT. Canal Cafe show on Wednesday 6th February

Hello there. We're pleased as punch to announce a half-hour show at the Canal Cafe on 6th February. It's a Wednesday.

The show is a double bill, with half an hour of us doing something (hopefully new, possibly varied, definitely funny), and half an hour of the amazing Girl & Dean, doing their sketches of delight. You will have heard G&D on our podcast. They're splendid. We will keep you updated with what we plan to do.

Did I mention that the 6th of February is a Wednesday? I do hope so.

The Canal Cafe is in Little Venice, on Delamere Terrace, as it has been for many Wednesdays in the past. It's where Newsrevue happens. There's a map here.

That information was pretty much all in the title. Let me try to pad this out.

I was afraid of iTunes for a long time, but now I've loaded it up, and it's quite good, isn't it? Party shuffle is fun, no? I'm listening to "Man On The Moon" by R.E.M. and the next track is "The Wanton Song" by Led Zeppelin. Whoever thought that you'd ever hear those two songs together?! Not I, sir. Not I.

It's the series premiere of the Penny Dreadfuls' first radio series, and it brings the goods. Good lord, it is great.

If you are a long-haul truck driver or nurse on the late-shift, it is repeated on Saturday at 4.30 in the morning.

And last but not least, thanks to the hordes of people at the Etcetera Theatre last night for "Pegabovine Present The Present Present From Pegabovine In The Present 2". Despite ever-increasing levels of sickitude, it was a charming, charming night, despite the fact that I didn't get any of the mince pies or port that were handed out.

Dear all -

So, we've been pretty quiet since Edinburgh. Sorry about that. What have we been up to? Well...

Imagine in this paragraph there is a Rocky-style montage of training, shadowboxing, running up some steps, and telling some jokes. Jen also taught a lot of kids in this time.

Anyway, we now return, triumphant, to the ring. Or in this case three rings. Like a circus. And in we come, punching all the clowns, screaming "Adriaaan" at the performing seals, and... yeah, that's pretty much that for that mixed metaphor.

The three rings are:-

1) THE INTERNET. As you may have seen, we've revamped our website (http://www.pegabovine.co.uk/), and will use its newly orange-hue as a platform to launch "Pegabovine's House Of Mirth", our new podcast. Yes! A podcast! Like only futuristic kids and ROBOTS make! The first episode will hit the internet TONIGHT! Jeez! That's even quicker and more surprising than when Radiohead released their last album! The podcast is a variety show to allow us to try out some radio material, and to host some of our creative friends. First episode features Holly from Like A Thief singing a song, Luke Kennard reading poetry, and comedy from Girl And Dean, Stuart Goldsmith, The Actor Loo Brealey, Noel Byrne, and Lewis James. Keep your eyes on http://www.pegabovine.co.uk/!

2) THE RADIO. We are featuring in the first episode of the new series of "28 Acts In 28 Minutes" on BBC Radio 4 on THURSDAY 19th December at 6.30pm (and thereafter on Listen Again). We've got that all important thirteenth minute, as taken in the past by Dan Antopolski, Mark Watson, Howard Reed, Gary Le Strange, Pete Gold, and Maria Bamford. If you wanted to listen to only us, turn on your radio at 6.43pm and turn it off again at 6.44pm. That would be silly though - also featured in our show are Stewart Lee, The Puppini Sisters, Stephen K Amos, Jeff Green, Stuart Goldsmith & Hutch, and John Sessions. Amazing!

3) THE PUB IN CAMDEN HIGH STREET. Our second Christmas show is THIS FRIDAY. It is called "Pegabovine Present The Present Present From Pegabovine In The Present II" and starts at the nocturnal hour of 9.30pm. It features comedy from us, various shenanigans, music from Like A Thief, comedy from an unnamed comedy act (not a surprise, they just haven't told me their name), and a tape recording of Luke Kennard. It promises to be worth every penny of the five pounds entry fee! BOOM!

And then we have plans for the New Year, but we haven't decided what they are yet. Thanks for staying interested in us, and we hope you enjoy the festive treats we dollop on your comedic plate over the next... um... three days.

Although extremely delighted with the new design of the website, I petition to have some of the pictures of my face removed from the PEGABOVINE. It's like being in a horrifying hall of mirrors in which the mirrors display the faces of your former selves (in fringe comedy plays).

NSDF has Arts Council funding cut

The first show we did as the sort of semi-professionals that we now are was "The Freudian Slip", which was selected for the National Student Drama Festival. We won two awards there, had an opportunity to show our work to 1000 students, met countless theatrical professionals who have become advisors and friends, made lasting friendships with our practitioner peers, disco-danced with Mark Ravenhill, and were on a panel with Frantic Assembly. It was one of the best weeks of my life. I've been every year since, working on the daily magazine Noises Off, and have seen a staggering array of amazing work from people who are about to become household names - Al Smith, Joel Horwood, Tom Dalton Bidwell, Thom Tuck from the Penny Dreadfuls, Chris Perkin, Alex Ferguson, Khalid Abdalla, Tom Ferguson, and loads more.

The Arts Council has decided to cut funding for the NSDF, putting its future in very real jeopardy. Please visit the link below for more information, and do sign the petition.

"Pegabovine: Coat Of Arms" Edinburgh Festivals Magazine Review

FOUR STARS (OUT OF FIVE)

Opening in 1066, this farcical sketch comedy follows the history of the Winterbloom family, owners of the magical ‘coat of arms’ (an actual coat, with three sets of arms), which has been passed down through generations and allows the family to time travel. This cast of two boys and a girl work brilliantly as an ensemble, performing a range of different characters in different eras, as well as songs and several hilarious references to time travel classics such as ‘Back to the Future.’ The sketches are snappy, funny and unpredictable, and in this intimate space (to which many allusions are made in the show) it is impossible not to be infected by the obvious enjoyment of the performers on stage. The show creates a fun and friendly atmosphere which is guaranteed to put you in a good mood.

"Pegabovine: Coat Of Arms" Chortle Review

THREE STARS (OUT OF FIVE)

There’s a lot of stupid fun to be had with Pegabovine’s anarchic time-travelling romp; a threaded sketch show that’s under no illusions about how daft, convoluted and low-budget it is.

The ridiculous premise is that three down-on-their-luck aristocrats try to figure out how to save their estate from their recently deceased father’s crippling gambling debts. Brian (Matthew Henry Johnson) is the sensible one, straightman if you will, while his dippy, dreamy sister Petula (Jenny Sutton) wants to turn the family seat into a fringe theatre, where they could stage a sketch show. How very postmodern.

But every scene is stolen by the third sibling, Quentin (Davis Wateracre), an incorrigible cad hell-bent on drinking and gambling away what scant resources the family do have left. It may just be the stage alcoholism, but Wateracre seems to carry the spirit of Graham Chapman, undermining of the authority figure he cuts with a self-destructive, devil-may-care mischief.

The one thing that could save the family from bankruptcy is a fabled coat of arms – literally, a coat with lots of arms – that enables the wearer to journey through time. Brian is typically sceptical, but we know it exists...

Thus we jump around, from the 1066 Norman invasion to the 1348 plague, from a misguided inventor in 1833 to the caddish upper classes in 1901, triple, quadruple, quintruple-crossing each other in a stupidly escalating deceit.

The show subverts itself, and almost collapses under the weight of its stupidly labyrinthine plot. But that’s the point.

It’s a very knowing script, hugely inventive and rich in sparkling lines. The action cracks along at a snappy pace, and it’s performed with cheeky, freewheeling vigour by all three participants. The word ‘madcap’ is a double-edged sword, but is apt here, even if an obvious intelligence guides the silliness. Overambitious and slightly unfocussed, maybe, but good fun.
